Hungarian Short Film ‘A Siege’ Wins Student Academy Award

A Siege, Hungarian István Kovács's his short film got the Bronze Student Oscar at the 45th Student Academy Awards . The 23-minute film is set in 1994, in war-torn Sarajevo, where a lonely Bosnian woman embarks on a journey during the siege to find water so she can finally wash her hair and feel attractive again before a much-anticipated date, and neither her neighbours nor sniper fire can stop her. It is the first Student Oscar after 27 years that goes to a Hungarian director. We are delighted to have been able to work on this film, shot on 16 mm film.

The annual event of the Internation Federation of Film Archives, the 74th FIAF Congress took place in Prague from 22-27 April. Hungarian Filmlab has been present at the conference every year since 2005. Our colleagues participated as exhibitors, informing attendees about archive restoration works in progress, future possibilities and past references, enhancing our decades of professional experience in the field. They attended lectures, met delegates of companies manufacturing equipment for film restoration and researchers of film archives among which every year there are more and more young people.

Hungary’s 'One Day' Competing At Cannes Festival

Hungarian director Zsófia Szilágyi's debut feature length title One Day has been selected to compete at this year's Cannes Film Festival's International Critics, a section dedicated to directors’ first and second films. The film, which tells the story of a mother with three children living under a tight schedule, will compete for the Golden Camera for the best first film against six other feature films and nine short films Szilágyi’s film was supported under the Hungarian Film Fund’s Incubator Programme for debut directors. It is planned to be shown in Hungary in the autumn. Post production works were performed by the Hungarian Filmlab.

Hungary will be competing at the Academy Awards again. Ildikó Enyedi’s “On Body and Soul” was announced today as a nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The third Hungarian film in a row (after Son of Saul and Sing) to cheer for on the day of the gala ceremony on March 4th.
